Our Mission

Empowering national security through advanced signal processing solutions.

BlackSignal has successfully supported Command, Control, Computers, Communications, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C5ISR) missions for the U.S. national security community since its founding in 2007. The company has established a reputation with the U.S. Department of Defense and Intelligence Community as an innovator in the areas of digital signal processing and the geolocation and tracking of radio frequency signals of interest. Partnered with national security investor, Razor's Edge Ventures, BlackSignal is building upon its past performance to build the pre-eminent next-generation advanced digital signal processing company delivering innovation to the U.S. national security community.

Our Story

The BlackSignal platform started at Blue Ridge Envisioneering (BRE), founded in 2007 by Bob Harkness and Ned Zimmer.  Harkness and Zimmer founded BRE with the idea of creating and operating as a more agile signal, waveform, and radar innovation shop, moving faster and more efficiently than the competition. BRE was one of the first companies to leverage contemporary computing technologies, such as graphics processing units (GPUs), paired with commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) software-defined radios (SDRs), to explore new techniques for signal processing. This insight has allowed BRE to become a prominent digital signal processing firm within the U.S. DoD and IC known for its effective and accurate geolocation and tracking solutions, novel approaches to detecting and characterizing complex signals, and utilization of machine learning (ML) and deep neural networks for automated signal detection and identification.
